| Starring: Ranveer Singh , Deepika Padukon Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been one of the most prolific film makers in Bollywood ever since he made his debut with ‘Khamoshi’ in 1996. Over the years, he has made some iconic films and now he is back with yet another colorful entertainer in the form of ‘Ram-Leela’. Starring the alleged real-life couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, this film has hit the screens after huge rounds of promotions. Let’s read on to see if ‘Ram-Leela’ lives up to its promise. Story: Ram-Leela is Bhansali’s take on Shakespeare’s epic story Romeo and Juliet. Interestingly, Bhansali locates his film in the interior regions of Gujarat where two rival groups, Saneda and Rajadis, are archrivals who can’t stand each other. Ram (Ranveer Singh) belongs to the Sanedas whereas Leela (Deepika) is from the Rajadi group. The expected twist in the tale comes about when they fall in love with each other inspite of knowing that they belong to the rival gangs. The rest of ‘Ram-Leela’ is about how the couple manages to unite despite the violent rivalry in their communities. Positive Points: As with every Bhansali film, ‘Ram-Leela’ also has a lot of grandeur and color with the sets, locations, costumes and whole set up being extremely colorful. The first half of the movie is extremely peppy and entertaining. Without doubt, Deepika Padukone is the highlight of the film. She is getting better and better with every film and ‘Ram-Leela’ is no exception. She had a tough role to portray as Leela and she has done it with a lot of ease. Ranveer and Deepika’s chemistry is surely worth a mention. Their screen presence is sizzling and both of them set the house on fire with their chemistry. ‘Ram-Leela’ will surely be Ranveer’s big ticket to super stardom as he looks amazing thanks to his screen presence and a super-fit physique to top it all. Supriya Pathak and Gulshan Deviah play their supporting roles well. Another major plus of the film is the music which is pretty entertaining. There are a few hit numbers which might bring in a repeat audience to the film. Negative Points: After an entertaining first half, the movie lacks pace in the second half. A lot of scenes have been stretched out and look pale. Ranveer’s character lacks focus in the second half and a number of songs also hinder the pace of the film. Ram-Leela’s look also reminds you of Bhansali’s previous film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ that was also set in Gujarat. Deepika’s character has a lot of similarities to Aishwarya Rai in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and even her look is designed similarly to Aishwarya. The film also has a lot of violence which might not be appreciated by the family audiences. There are too many cinematic liberties that have been taken and the climax will not appeal to everyone. Also, Priyanka Chopra’s item song is a big no and has also not been choreographed and directed as anticipated. Technical Aspects:- Whenever Bhansali attempts a film like ‘Ram-Leela’, he makes sure that the technical aspects are top notch. With ‘Ram Leela’, he makes sure that the whole set up looks real while creating an imaginary world and bases his story amidst it. Cinematography is stunning and captures the Gujarati flavor excellently. The music like all Bhansali movies is probably the biggest asset of the film with Bhansali giving a rocking score as the music composer. All the songs are very catchy and register immediately and they have also been shot on a large scale and the production values are amazing. The editing is sleek and the background score by Monty Sharma is pretty awesome. The dialogues are contemporary and so are the lyrics. The screenplay of the movie is pretty decent but then it lacks pace during the second half. Bhansali’s direction is also good as he manages to present a simple love story in a whole new set-up convincingly. Verdict: Overall, ‘Ram-Leela’ has the decent ingredients for a colorful entertainer. However, if you are prepared for a slow and mediocre second half, then Ram-Leela is definitely worth a watch for its peppy music and sizzling chemistry between the lead pair. |
